Why do I need travel insurance?

You may fall ill or have an accident, you could have money or luggage stolen, your holiday might be cancelled or cut short through injury or illness. Your travel insurance will cover these eventualities and reimburse you or if necessary pay your medical bills.

Our overall advice would be that it's just not worth the risk of going for the rock bottom rates (as you never know how difficult or stressful it might be to make a claim). However, the prices quoted at the top end (for example, with tour operators, as mentioned just) are simply exorbitant and rarely offer additional cover that's worth the mark up. There is though invariably a happy medium, often easily found.

At the end of the day, if you're booking a flight on-line with a well known company, it might be a good time to also book insurance at the same time (so you don't forget, apart from anything else).

In any case, don't leave it for too long - not only will last minute panics lead you to buying your insurance from just about anyone, but you'll fail to benefit from the cancellation aspects of the policy.

Before you go on holiday, don't forget to...

  • Take your travel insurance policy number and the 24-hour emergency number with you
  • Ensure you have a valid passport and the necessary visas
  • Take a photocopy of important documents with you and leave a copy with your family
  • Check what vaccinations you need with your GP at least six weeks before you travel
  • Pack any medication in your hand luggage
  • If travelling within the EEA (European Economic Area), get an E111 from the Post Office
  • Take a phrase book that you can use in emergencies
